To sustain the increases in crop yields needed to feed future populations, a plentiful supply of plant nutrients is essential, but in recent years heavy use of fertilizer has been blamed for environmental damage. In this paper, the authors review past trends in fertilizer use, estimate future needs, and assess technical and policy measures for dealing with environmental and energy concerns related to fertilizer use.
