Participation in High-Value Agricultural Markets

Varietal diversification and the adoption of modern varieties of wheat and millet in India and beans in Rwanda

The aim of this HarvestPlus-funded project is to investigate various aspects of varietal diversification and the adoption of modern varieties of wheat and millet in India and beans in Rwanda. Varietal maps will be generated for beans in Rwanda and for the two Indian states chosen for millet and wheat. The maps will be based on a primary survey of farmers, agri-input suppliers, agricultural extension officers, and seed companies.

The research is expected to refine target areas for potential interventions, in addition to shedding light on several variety development and delivery issues, including:

  • What are the variety traits that farm households value the most and hence would be most likely to look for when adopting new varieties?
  • How can the adoption of biofortified varieties be ensured?
  • What kind of institutions (public, private, formal, and informal) should be strengthened to ensure the adoption of biofortified varieties of crops?
