The African Agricultural Markets Programme (AAMP) aims to enhance regional capacity, policy dialogue, and coordination on staple food markets in eastern and southern Africa. AAMP provides policymakers with up-to-date research results, as well as training courses in methods for analyzing agricultural markets. As one of the key programs within the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) Pillar 2, AAMP has been implemented through a series of six events, consisting of a series of two-day policy seminars and two-day training courses on selected topics related to staple crop marketing and a conference aimed at giving journalists the tools to understand and interpret agricultural market trends.
The Programme was launched by the Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Ministers of Agriculture in 2008 and is funded by the Department of International Development (DFiD) of the United Kingdom and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). Managed by the World Bank and implemented by the Alliance for Commodity Trade in Eastern and Southern Africa (ACTESA), research is provided by an analytical team comprised of researchers from IFPRI and Michigan State University. The Programme originally covered seven countries in eastern and southern Africa (Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia) and was later expanded to include Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Rwanda.
