The rapid growth in crop-based biofuels in both North America, Latin America and the European Union has caused considerable interest and concern, among the policy research community, given its implications for the environment, as well as human well-being. IMPACT has been used to study the implications of rapid biofuels growth under a variety of scenarios, and has been modified with additional modules for energy demand and biofuels supply, demand and trade (See Diagram). A number of projects are being undertaken by IFPRI, and the IMPACT modeling group, to address the human welfare dimensions of biofuels growth, and to recommend appropriate actions and measures, on the part of policy makers.
