When shocks strike, extreme conditions set in, or poverty traps persist, the distribution of food aid to the ultra poor is often essential to maintaining their food security. Food assistance, as defined by the World Food Programme, is a set of instruments, including in-kind food, vouchers, and cash transfers, used to address the food needs of the most vulnerable.
Project information
IFPRI research on this topic examines the effectiveness of and potential alternatives to current food assistance practices at the national, regional and international level. IFPRI researchers also examine the link between food aid strategies and health and social issues.
