The A1B SRES scenario considers the possibility of a future of strong and equitable economic growth (3 percent per year globally), with poorer regions catching up economically with richer regions. This potential future is characterized by:
- Prominent role for free markets, and market-based solutions
- High levels of savings
- High mobility of people, ideas, technology, and goods
- Higher affluence leads to longer life spans, and lower fertility. Population peaks at 9 billion around 2050, decreasing to around 7 billion by 2100.
- Technological advances ease resource crunches by increasing economic efficiencies and leading to a diminishing energy intensity (energy use per unit of GDP) of the global economy
