In this paper an attempt is made to assess the reliability of the Ravens Coloured Progressive Matrices (RCPM) as a culture, sex, education, income and family background neutral measure of latent ability. The study uses data on 266 children under the ages of 11 years from rural areas of four districts of Pakistan, collected by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPR1). The study finds that while the scores are neutral with respect to household income and background represented by the father's occupation and education and levels of the child's education controlling for age, the scores do not appear to be gender or culture neutral. These results underscore the need for considerable additional analysis before the RCPM can be accepted as a neutral measure of latent ability in Pakistan.
