Global Perspectives of New Agricultural Negotiations under the WTO

Wednesday, September 20, 2000, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.

by Xinshen Diao, IFPRI

In the next round of negotiations under the WTO, agriculture will very likely become a major focus and possible source of disagreement. Purpose of this study is to assess the possible global impacts of further agricultural liberalization from a static-snapshot perspective, and from a dynamic perspective. We choose to analyze the case of profound policy reform, i.e., the elimination of most of agricultural support and trade protection throughout the world. Such analysis provides bounds around what are likely to be the maximum effects (extreme outcomes) of any further global agricultural liberalization.
