The magnitude and depth of HIV/AIDS impacts in Sub-Saharan Africa are staggering. The magnitude and depth of HIV/AIDS impacts in Sub-Saharan Africa are staggering. Livelihoods are being devastated and the food and nutrition security of millions of households seriously undermined. This seminar will present highlights of recent exploratory work undertaken by IFPRI, with support from the Department for International Development (DFID) and the World Food Programme (WFP), that has focused on examining:

  • The type of impacts and pathways through which HIV/AIDS affects agriculture, food security, and nutrition
  • The types of responses made by households and communities in trying to reduce these effects
  • The policy and program implications of these impacts and responses, including any lessons from recent attempts at direct impact mitigation
  • The implications of the above for future research
