JOACHIM VON BRAUN
Director General
Joachim von Braun, a citizen of Germany, joined the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) as its director general in September 2002. Prior to that, he was director of the Center for Development Research, which he co-founded in 1997, at the University of Bonn, Germany. Von Braun headed the Department of Economics and Technical Change and was a professor in the Institute for Agricultural Policy. Von Braun's association with IFPRI includes seven years as a research fellow and three years as director of the Food Consumption and Nutrition Division. He has worked in developing countries for many years and is known for his work on food security and mitigating and preventing famines. He holds a Doctoral degree and a Professorial title, both in agricultural economics from the University of Göttingen in Germany. Von Braun has published widely in his various areas of expertise, including the economics of bio-diversity and biotechnology in low-income countries, and the relationship of development to governance, trade, food and agriculture, and information and communications. His publications include Famine In Africa: Causes, Responses, and Prevention, coauthored by Tesfaye Teklu and Patrick Webb.Von Braun is currently the president of the International Association of Agricultural Economists. |

JOHN PENDER
Senior Research Fellow
John Pender, a senior research fellow, joined IFPRI in 1995 after working as an assistant professor of economics at Brigham Young University. His research at IFPRI focuses on the causes and effects of agricultural change in fragile lands, particularly the highlands of East Africa and the hillsides of Central America. He is involved in fieldwork to characterize the regions being studied and in designing and conducting community, household, and plot-level surveys. Pender received a bachelor's degree from the California Institute of Technology, a Master's in public policy from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from Stanford University. He is the author of "Strategies For Sustainable Development in the East African Highlands" and the coeditor of the IFPRI 2020 Focus Brief series "Promoting Sustainable Development in Less-Favored Areas." He is a U.S. citizen. |

ELENI GABRE-MADHIN
Research Fellow
Eleni Gabre-Madhin joined IFPRI in 1998 and is currently a research fellow. She was previously an economic affairs officer at the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development in Geneva, Switzerland. A citizen of Ethiopia, Gabre-Madhin earned a B.A. in economics from Cornell University, an M.Sc. in agricultural economics from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in applied economics from Stanford University. Gabre-Madhin is currently working on the project on "Public Policies for Rural Institutions, Markets and Infrastructure Development." Her research areas include institutions and transaction costs of agricultural markets in Africa, emerging commodity exchanges, synthesis of agricultural market reforms in Africa, structural transformation, and regional food trade in Eastern Africa. Her publications include "Market Institutions, Transaction Costs, and Social Capital in the Ethiopian Grain Market," and Reforming Agricultural Markets In Africa, which she coauthored. |
