We at IFPRI are saddened to learn of the passing of Norman E. Borlaug. He spearheaded a global effort to put modern science to work on behalf of agricultural development, thereby reducing hunger and improving the lives of billions of people around the world. Although first and foremost a scientist, he placed strong emphasis on technology combined with bold policy change. His outstanding intellect went hand in hand with an unlimited dedication to the cause and a charming and humane personality.

IFPRI benefitted immensely from his strong cooperation and support, and deeply appreciates his wise guidance as a distinguished member of IFPRI’s 2020 Vision Advisory Council and as a committed participant of numerous consultations at IFPRI, including on IFPRI’s current research strategy. His urgent call at IFPRI’s 2004 Africa Conference asking the region’s leaders to invest in their countries’ agricultural development will long be remembered as a turning point in African development strategies.

Dr. Borlaug has inspired generations of scientists, policymakers, civil-society agents, and countless others to seek solutions to end hunger and poverty. We at IFPRI remain committed to realizing his dream.
