Akhter Ahmed

Akhter Ahmed is a Senior Research Fellow in the IFPRI’s Poverty, Gender, and Inclusion Unit and Country Representative for IFPRI Bangladesh. He has worked on strategies for agricultural and rural development, social protection, and women’s empowerment to reduce poverty, food insecurity, and undernutrition in developing countries including Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India, Malawi, the Philippines, and Turkey.

Modi’s health reforms: Between hope and hype (The Lancet)

The Lancet (USA) reported on the Modi government’s first 100 days of his second term. The article reviewed the National Nutrition Mission (the Poshan Abhiyan), a reform to counter the malnutrition crisis in India. Senior Research Fellow Purnima Menon stated “Previous governments had acknowledged the problem but hadn’t given it as much visibility from a political standpoint. The challenge that lies ahead for the Mission is getting the implementation right.”
