UN Committee Report Says World Nutrition Making Little Progress

Unconscionable and unnecessary levels of malnutrition and human deprivation will persist unless concrete actions to combat these problems begin to accelerate now, say the United Nations Administrative Committee on Coordination's sub-Committee on Nutrition (ACC/SCN), in collaboration with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

Next week the organizations will release the 4th Report on the World Nutrition Situation: Nutrition Throughout the Life Cycle, which shows that current trends, unless changed, will condemn countries to escalating health burdens and will drastically limit their broader development prospects. The report, to be launched at the 27th annual meeting of the ACC/SCN held at World Bank headquarters in Washington and jointly hosted by UNICEF, will highlight the size of the malnutrition problem and its consequences for human and economic development. It will also stress the need to move ahead in creative partnerships.

The press is cordially invited to attend a morning symposium on the World Nutrition Situation titled, "Challenges and Opportunities for the UN in the Next Century," with Dr. Kul Gautam, Deputy Executive Director, UNICEF; Dr. Eduardo Doryan, Vice President, World Bank; Dr. Richard Jolly, SCN Chair; Dr. Per Pinstrup-Andersen, Director General, IFPRI; Mr. F.H. Abed, Executive Director, BRAC Bangladesh. The symposium will be immediately followed by a press luncheon/Q&A session with the panelists.
