IFPRI launched the 2020 Vision for Food, Agriculture, and the Environment Initiative in 1993. It was designed to increase the uptake of research messages by the policymaking community in developed and developing countries, particularly after support for agriculture decreased rapidly in the aid portfolios of bilateral and multilateral donors during the 1980s and early 1990s. An important component of the 2020 Initiative is hosting high-profile conferences as part of global policy consultations on key emerging issues influencing prospects for hunger and poverty. The Initiative organized major conferences in 1995, 2001, 2004, and 2007 in Washington, Bonn, Kampala, and Beijing, respectively. Each conference produced a set of outputs that included books, discussion papers, and policy briefs.
