  • Grain Prices, Yields and Production: 1997- 2020
    Projections from IFPRI's IMPACT model

    Wheat

    • During 1997-2020, IFPRI's IMPACT models projects that given current polices, wheat prices will decline by 8%.
    • Demand will increase by 45% or about 266 million metric tons.
    • Yield will increase from 2616 kg/ ha in 1997 to 3190 kg/ ha in 2020.
    • Total production will be nearly 760 million metric tons worldwide.

    Maize

    • During 1997-2020, maize prices will remain fairly constant.
    • Demand will increase by 30% or about 175 million metric tons.
    • Yield will increase from 4233 kg/ ha in 1997 to 5399 kg/ ha in 2020.
    • Total production will be about 850 million metric tons worldwide.

    Rice

    • Rice prices are projected to fall 11% by 2020.
    • Demand will increase by 32% or about 122 million metric tons.
    • Yield will increase from 2536 kg/ ha in 1997 to 3238 kg/ ha in 2020.
    • Total production will be about 500 million metric tons worldwide.

    Other Coarse Grains

    • Other grains, including barley, millets, oats, rye and sorghum will see an 11% drop in prices between 1997 and 2020.
    • Demand will increase by 31% or about 91 million metric tons.
    • Yield will increase from 1714 kg/ ha in 1997 to 2048 kg/ ha in 2020.
    • Total production will be over 380 million metric tons worldwide.
