Why Gender Matters to Trade
Evidence from Jamaica, Mexico, and Bangladesh
Abstract
How do gender considerations inform macroeconomic trade and investment policy? Do poor men and women experience differentiated effects of trade policy at the meso and micro-level? Drawing on examples from research in Jamaica and Mexico, as well as emerging activities in Bangladesh, Ms. White will highlight ways in which women have been affected by trade liberalization policies in the past. She will also discuss avenues for researchers and policymakers to pursue to ensure both men and women seize the opportunities presented by global trade and ameliorate any unintended negative consequences. The discussion will include trade sectors such as agriculture, services, and intellectual property rights.
