ORGANIZATION PROFILE

    Centre for Sustainable Agriculture
The Centre for Sustainable Agriculture at the University of the Free State offers postgraduate students the opportunity to acquire skills in an inter- and multidisciplinary course, over a minimum period of two years, based upon a parallel-medium distance education technique. Study is completed with a research project and submission of a thesis. Graduates earn a master's degree in sustainable agriculture (MSA).

The objectives of the program are:

      • to develop and verify sustainable agricultural production systems for the semiarid regions of Southern Africa that will comply with the prerequisites of sustainability,
      • to educate experts capable of creating, managing, and maintaining such production systems through on-farm research and extension activities or the Farming Systems Research and Extension (FSR&E) approach, and
      • to facilitate a paradigm shift toward the concept of sustainability and resource conservation.

The Centre for Sustainable Agriculture states that any agricultural production system must comply with the following prerequisites in order to be sustainable: economical productivity, biological productivity, conservation and management of natural resources, security and minimization of risk, and social acceptance. NETWORK PROFILE

2020 Vision Network for East Africa
The East Africa Network consists of Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Uganda, with Ethiopia participating as an observer for the time being. To assure that the network remains sustainable and relevant, IFPRI has become partners with the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa, in particular its Eastern and Central Africa Program for Agricultural Policy Analysis. The network was established as part of International Food Policy Research Institute's 2020 Vision for Food, Agriculture, and the Environment initiative. The 2020 Vision initiative is helping to develop a shared vision and consensus for action on how to meet future world food needs in a sustainable manner.
