ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Call for Collaborators
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) recently launched a review of "Successes in African Agriculture" to help identify a priority policy research agenda in Africa over the coming years. IFPRI is looking for African collaborators with experience in each of the following case study topics: increased maize production from hybrid maize development and adoption across Africa; cassava production from breeding for resistance to mosaic virus across Africa; rice production in West Africa (contrasted with Madagascar, Tanzania, or elsewhere); cotton production in West Africa (contrasted with Tanzania, Zambia, or Uganda); horticultural exports in Kenya (contrasted with Uganda or elsewhere); smallholder dairying in East Africa (Kenya contrasted with Uganda and Ethiopia); and sustainable Agriculture (conservation farming, low external input systems, farmer participation) across Africa. Interested candidates should send a brief expression of interest to the co-coordinator of the IFPRI review of successes in African agriculture, Steve Haggblade (s.haggblade@cgiar.org) and with a copy to co-coordinator Eleni Gabre-Madhin (e.gabre-hadhin@cgiar.org). Attach a short CV along with a note summarizing: experience with the case study topic, suggested locations and time periods for both successes and failures, sites in which the candidate has experience working, and time availability for the next 12 months.

NETWORK PROFILE

Southern African Regional Poverty Network (SARPN)
SARPN was founded by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and the Department for International Development (DFID). The goals of SARPN are to strengthen existing and emerging links between policy actors, practitioners, applied researchers, and civil society organizations concerned with poverty issues across Southern Africa; to facilitate exchanges of information between institutions and individuals in Southern Africa on poverty issues; and to promote discussion between these actors on pro-poor policy options in different country settings and within the region. The network will try to meet these objectives by hosting regular seminars and roundtable discussion groups. For more information, email the secretariat at sarpn@hsrc.ac.za.
