  1. Food Policy Postdoctoral Fellowships

    The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) will award three one-year postdoctoral fellowships starting in September 2002. The objective is to generate sustained capacity to undertake policy research for solving food, agricultural, and natural resource problems in developing countries and to communicate the results for maximum policy impact.

    Eligibility: Candidates should have received their PhDs from developing country institutions within the last five years in the areas of agricultural economics, economics, political science, or other social sciences or disciplines related to IFPRI's research and outreach mandates. Candidates should intend to make a career in policy research or advising and to work within government ministries, nongovernmental organizations, or academic institutions in developing countries. Young faculty members and female applicants are encouraged to apply.

    Application: Candidates should submit (1) a curriculum vitae; (2) a brief synopsis of their PhD dissertation; (3) a two-page description of the proposed policy research problem in their home country that is related to one of the themes below; (4) an explanation of the data needs, availability, and methods of analysis; and (5) a brief statement of their career interests and intention to apply their skills in their home country. Selected candidates will be expected to begin their stay at IFPRI in September 2002.

    Themes: IFPRI conducts research, outreach, capacity strengthening, and policy communication at the country and global level in the following areas: (1) micronutrient malnutrition, microfinance, gender and intrahousehold analysis, and urban household food security; (2) agricultural technologies, fragile lands, water management, property rights, and public investment in agriculture; (3) market reforms, income and crop diversification, post harvest systems and rural income, and export promotion; (4) macroeconomic policy reforms and agriculture and regional trade arrangements; and (5) policy communication and capacity strengthening for policy research and analysis.

  2. World Food Prize

    Dr. Per Pinstrup-Andersen, the Director-General of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), was awarded the World Food Prize for 2001 for his contribution to eliminating food insecurity. He initiated the research effort that established the "Food For Education" programs and formulated IFPRI's 2020 Vision Initiative. His efforts have helped shape world food policies.

    In addition to leading IFPRI for the past 10 years and guiding it as it became the world's leading think-tank on hunger issues, Pinstrup-Andersen is a Fellow of the American Agricultural Economics Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He has eceived honorary doctoral degrees from Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, India; Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland, University of Aberdeen, U.K; and Wageningen University, The Netherlands. He is an honorary professor at the Tashkent State University in Uzbekistan and a Distinguished Professor at Wageningen University, the Netherlands.
