The Institute of Rural Development
The Institute of Rural Development (IRE) at the University of Göttingen, Germany, was founded in 1963. Its objectives are to contribute to a better understanding of the social, economic, and political problems of rural development on the basis of theoretical and empirical analyses; to contribute to the design of rural development strategies and instruments and elaborate policy recommendations; to promote empirical research and the analysis of structures and processes at the individual, family, household, village, and district levels; and to provide training and facilitate the exchange of scientific experience in the fields of rural development. IRE teaches and conducts interdisciplinary, multi-sector research on the economic, political, and social dimensions of rural development, including urban-rural relations. Sector Network "Rural Development in Sub-Saharan Africa"
The Sector Network "Rural Development in Sub-Saharan Africa" (SNRD), constituted in October 1995 in Lesotho, aims to secure and enhance the quality of technical cooperation services in rural development. It links over 60 projects and around 150 individual members in Sub-Saharan Africa and consists of six subject-based workgroups: Decentralization and Rural Development, Community Based Natural Resource Management, Innovation and Extension Approaches, HIV/AIDS and Rural Development, Sector Reform and Sector Investment Programs, and Forestry. It is open to all Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) supported rural development projects in Sub-Saharan Africa. The network actively seeks linkages to other development institutions to improve and exchange cooperation between rural development projects, the GTZ head office, other development institutions, local and international consultants, and NGOs.
