The International Year of Freshwater (IYFW) was officially launched at the United Nations in New York on December 12, 2002. The aim of the IYFW is to raise awareness of the importance of protecting and managing freshwater. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has set up a special website, which provides a platform for countries and individuals all over the world to share their ideas, initiatives, and events for the Year 2003.
