NETWORK PROFILE

  • Women Organizing for Change in Agriculture and Natural Resource Management (WOCAN)
WOCAN, a global network, has been formed for professional women working in agriculture and natural resource management around the world. Its goal is to build an alliance of women and men who support a process of change for gender equality in programs and organizations and to advocate for the same in governments and national and international agencies. It was established in 2004 with headquarters in New York, United States. WOCAN’s basic principle is that organizations need to become gender sensitive in order to promote sustainable development for rural communities. Its mission is to empower professional women engaged in natural resource management sectors by improving their capabilities and providing them with opportunities to share information and experiences globally; to establish and support platforms for women to build alliances so that they may work effectively toward the dual causes of rural women’s empowerment and environmental sustainability; and to transform programs and organizations by strengthening the position of professional women engaged in agriculture, forestry, and other relevant sectors.
