IFPRI: Strategic Training and Policy Communications

Strategic Training
IFPRI Capacity Strengthening Strategy 2004 (Draft)

Brochure

photoA major constraint in designing appropriate policies for agricultural growth and rural development in developing countries is the dearth of local institutions and trained staff that can analyze and formulate policies and programs. As a result, food policy research is conducted at the international level in order to generate public goods that are useful simultaneously to several developing countries. However, strengthening the local capacity to analyze the information generated by local research and to use this information effectively in formulating policy is fundamental to overcoming poverty and food insecurity. Therefore, IFPRI’s Training for Capacity Strengthening Program works to enhance the local capacity of policy analysts, policymakers, policy researchers, decisionmakers, and their institutions to meet the policy challenges related to food, agriculture, natural resources, and poverty.

photoThe Training for Capacity Strengthening Program structures its activities around two strategic approaches: supporting international, national, and regional institutions by strengthening individual and institutional capacity at each level and supporting the efforts of IFPRI’s research and outreach divisions to implement their own training for capacity strengthening activities. IFPRI’s training for capacity strengthening activities serve institutions and individuals in the developing world, with an emphasis on South Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, China, Latin America, and sub-Saharan Africa.
