Danielle Resnick

Danielle Resnick is a Senior Research Fellow in the Markets, Trade, and Institutions Unit and a Non-Resident Fellow in the Global Economy and Development Program at the Brookings Institution. Her research focuses on the political economy of agricultural policy and food systems, governance, and democratization, drawing on extensive fieldwork and policy engagement across Africa and South Asia.

Bio

Rowena Andrea Valmonte-Santos is a Senior Research Analyst in the Foresight and Policy Modeling Unit. Her current work focuses on natural resource management with emphasis on food security in developing countries, participatory approaches to community-based fisheries management and gender, threats and opportunities of climate change, and to some extent biosafety and biotechnology in selected Asian countries. She has conducted trainings on common tools used for surveys in social science research and water quality assessment for collaborators from government and non-government organizations and universities in Asia.

Rowena joined IFPRI as a Program Analyst in 2003, and then became a Research Analyst in the former Environment and Production Technology Division. Prior to joining IFPRI, Rowena worked as an Assistant Scientist in Policy Research and Impact Assessment Program, WorldFish Center, Malaysia. A citizen of the Philippines, Rowena received her MSc in Environmental Studies from the University of the Philippines Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines.

Ending hunger in Asia and the Pacific by 2030: An assessment of investment requirements in agriculture

About 518 million people in Asia and the Pacific suffered from hunger in 2017—1 million more than in the previous year. Farmers face challenges such as shrinking natural resources, degrading environments, and declining labor availability in addition to climate change and financial non-viability. The demand for food and nutrition is also increasing. With all this, more investment in agriculture is needed to accomplish Sustainable Development Goal 2—ending hunger and malnutrition by 2030. In the report, findings presented were taken from the analysis of recent trends in food security, gross domestic product, and population growth as well as agricultural supply, demand, and trade.

Information and communication technology for agriculture in the People’s Republic of China

This report presents the findings of an assessment on the use of information and communication technology (ICT) to improve food production and distribution in the People’s Republic of China. The analysis focuses on e-commerce in rural areas of the country and provides policy recommendations to promote the use of ICT in the agricultural supply chain. The report documents the trends in ICT application by farmers and its impact on income and livelihood. It also identifies the major constraints to and enabling factors for such ICT applications.

Striking a balance: Managing El Niño and La Niña in Philippines’ agriculture

The purpose of this report is to improve the Philippines’ preparedness for the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) by informing stakeholders of ENSO’s agricultural and economic impacts. The report finds that ENSO has detrimental impacts on the Philippine people, economy, poverty levels, and agricultural sector. The country has taken actions and enacted policies to respond to ENSO events, but these have not adequately mitigated the costs of ENSO impacts. That said, there are further actions the country can take to better prepare for these impacts. This is important because of the Philippines’ high exposure to climate shocks, the rural population’s climate vulnerability, and the prominence of the agricultural sector in the national economy.
