Agnes Quisumbing

Agnes Quisumbing is a Senior Research Fellow in the Poverty, Gender, and Inclusion Unit. She co-leads a research program that examines how closing the gap between men’s and women’s ownership and control of assets may lead to better development outcomes.

Bio

Bedru Balana is a He has over fifteen years of experience in applied microeconomic research to inform agricultural development and food policies in Africa.

Bedru’s core research interests include technical and institutional constraints to investments in smallholder agriculture, natural resource management, climate change, livelihoods and poverty, and food security in developing countries. Bedru leads and manages large research for development (R4D) projects, oversees the planning and implementation of household surveys, and delivers capacity strengthening trainings. Since 2019, Bedru has been working on IFPRI’s Nigeria Strategy Support Programme (NSSP) where he has supervised, mentored, and effectively communicated with research staff, local partners, and collaborators to ensure timely completion of project activities; engaged in dialogues with program implementers, policy makers, and donors to inform the design and delivery of programs and policies sustainably enhance food security and reduce poverty in low-income countries; and has been in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and several other publications including book chapters, policy briefs, and technical reports. He has working experience in several sub-Saharan African countries including Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso.

Prior to joining IFPRI, Bedru worked in different academic and development research organizations including Mekelle University (Ethiopia), James Hutton Institute (the UK), and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI). He received his PhD in Agricultural Economics from Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium).
