The export sector of the Ugandan economy has recorded tremendous recent growth. Between 2000 and 2006, the value of exports climbed from US $401 million to US $962 million, with agricultural products accounting for 60 percent of this.

The market for food staples remains central to many agricultural-based economies because staple foods constitute such a major share of household food expenditures. Uganda is no different in this regard.
