Ten Years of Research on Chronic Poverty

The Chronic Poverty Research Centre (CPRC) marked ten years of poverty research with an international conference, “Ten years of ‘war against poverty’. What we have learned since 2000. What we should do 2010-2020,” held in Manchester, UK, September 8-10.

Leading poverty researchers and development practitioners met to assess the current ‘state of the art’ in poverty reduction, highlight key CPRC research, and set the agenda for research and policy through 2020.

Several IFPRI researchers presented papers at the conference, including:

• Derek Headey - “Hit and Miss: Why the relationship between economic growth and malnutrition is so varied”
• Suneetha Kadiyala - “Agriculture’s Role in the Indian Enigma: Help or Hindrance to the Malnutrition Crisis?” (joint work with Alice Chiu).
• Agnes Quisumbing - “Evaluating the Long-Term Impact of Agricultural Technologies in Bangladesh: Household and Intrahousehold Effects” (joint work with Neha Kumar).
• John Hoddinott - “The Impact of Poor Pre-School Nutritional Status over the Life Course” (joint work with Jere Behrman, John Maluccio, Reynaldo Martorell, Paul Melgar, Agnes Quisumbing, Manuel Ramirez-Zea, Aryeh Stein, and Kathryn Yount)
