Co-Organized by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and IFPRI
to

2021 is the first year for the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), as well as the centennial anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC). It is also a milestone, marking the achievement of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and the shift of priorities in agricultural and rural affairs to comprehensively promoting rural revitalization. The COVID-19 pandemic has created more challenges and complexities worldwide, thus also creating external uncertainties for China’s future development. The launch event will focus on the challenges facing food systems, as well as on possible policy responses to mitigate the impacts of major shocks while establishing a stronger and more resilient food system.

The China Agricultural Sector Development Report 2022 (CASDR) is one of the series of reports by CAAS and the Chinese Institute of Agricultural Development Strategies. Based on statistical data and the China Agricultural Sector Model (CASM), the CASDR 2022 focuses on the competitiveness of China’s oil industry, the risks the agri-food system faces during the 14th Five-Year Plan period and potential responses. The report discusses the most compelling challenges, i.e., natural disaster risks, shocks from international food price volatility and agri-food system transformation. The report also provides the projections of 18 agricultural sub-sectors including cereals, oilseeds, livestock products, and aquatic products.

The IFPRI 2022 Global Food Policy Report on Climate Change and Food Systems highlights a range of evidence-based lessons drawing on research from IFPRI and other CGIAR centers. It offers a number of promising policies and innovations that can help us better achieve food security, nutrition, and sustainability through hastening innovation, reforming policies, resetting market incentives, and increasing financing for sustainable food systems transformation, as well as promoting healthy diets and building resilience. The report stresses that these policies and innovations should be prioritized and implemented now to accelerate adaptation and mitigation in our food systems, making a substantial contribution to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
