Saving wildlife, livelihoods amid climate challenges in Kenya (Farmers Weekly)

Farmers Weekly (South Africa) published an article on how the degradation of the land had forced their livestock to compete with local wildlife for the fast-diminishing water supplies and grazing. According to the UN Environment Programme, the global food system was the primary driver of the loss of biodiversity. “Expansion of agricultural areas has been a key factor in the degradation of nature, including forest habitats,” said Claudia Ringler, deputy director of the environment and production technology division. To better understand and analyze food security, this three-year research project will develop a comprehensive index assessing countries’ food security vulnerability, called the Jameel Index for Food Trade and Vulnerability.
