From economic losses to social costs (Dhaka Tribune)

April 11, 2020

Dhaka Tribune reported on the predicted dire straits of the poor in Bangladesh as the nation comes out of the COVID-19 outbreak. The current poverty reduction rate in Bangladesh stands at 1.2%. It has been continuously decreasing since FY2000-01, when the rate was 1.8%. This trend of declining poverty reduction rate will be aggravated due to the  Covid-19 shutdown. According to estimates of IFPRI (see How much will global poverty increase because of COVID-19), if an economy slows down by 1%, it will increase the number of poor people — the number of food-insecure people — by 2%.
