The $1 Trillion Mountain: The Actual Cost of Food Waste (Huffington Post)

February 15, 2026

The Global Nutrition Report was mentioned in an article about food waste for Huffington Post. John Mandyck, chief sustainability officer at the United Technologies Corporation wrote that “studies have demonstrated that reducing hunger and undernutrition can actually raise a country’s gross domestic product (GDP). A report by the International Food Policy Research Institute showed that for every dollar a government invests in nutrition, it can see an average return of 16 times – and in some countries much higher.”

IFPRI’s Global Food Policy Report also mentions food waste extensively. Chapter 3 of the report, written by Monica Schuster and Maximo Torero, examines food loss and waste and explores solutions for policymakers, researchers, and consumers.
