Wim Marivoet

Research Fellow

Wim Marivoet is a Research Fellow in the Development Strategies and Governance Unit, based in Belgium. His main research interests include poverty measurement, livelihoods, and food and nutrition security (FNS), with a particular focus on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Wim co-leads projects on the development of spatial FNS typologies, agriculture sector reviews, and value chain and food system analyses. This work has been conducted in countries across Africa, and often involves capacity strengthening as well as implementing local surveys. Currently, he is analyzing the food value chains of cassava, rice, milk, and fish in the Eastern DRC and conducting research on resilience in the Sahel region. In Senegal, Wim is involved in strengthening national capacities and policies through research on food system transformation.

Before joining IFPRI, Wim worked as a research and teaching assistant and as a post-doctoral fellow at the Institute of Development Policy, University of Antwerp, Belgium, where his research and teaching centered on welfare measurement, coping strategies, and primary education.

Wim Marivoet obtained his PhD in Applied Economics from the University of Antwerp (UA) and holds master’s degrees in Globalization and Economic Development and in Commercial Engineering from the same university.
