Elodie Becquey

Elodie Becquey is a Senior Research Fellow in the Nutrition, Diets, and Health Unit, based in IFPRI’s West and Central Africa office in Senegal. She has over 15 years of research experience in diet, nutrition, and food security in Africa, including countries such as Burkina Faso, Chad, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, and Tanzania.

Replication Data for “Price and Volatility Transmission from International to Domestic Food and Fertilizer Markets in Central America”

This dataset contains replication data files for the paper “Price and Volatility Transmission from International to Domestic Food and Fertilizer Markets in Central America.” The study analyzes how international prices affect domestic price levels and volatility for key food commodities and agricultural inputs in selected Central American countries. The dataset includes time series data on domestic and international prices for 26 staple foods, cash crops, and agricultural inputs across seven Central American countries: Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, and Nicaragua. It covers: Staple foods essential to local diets: rice, beans, maize (corn), and wheat; Major export crops: bananas and coffee; Commonly used fertilizers: diammonium phosphate (DAP), urea, and ammonium nitrate. Domestic prices were compiled from sources such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and national market information systems. International prices were obtained from the FAO Statistical Database (FAOSTAT), Bloomberg, the International Coffee Organization, and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). All prices are reported in United States dollars (USD) and include monthly returns, enabling analysis of both price levels and price volatility. The replication files include raw and processed price data; Stata or Matlab scripts used in the analysis. These materials are intended to allow full replication of the results reported in the paper and support further research on food price transmission and volatility in developing regions.

Price and volatility transmission from international to domestic food and fertilizer markets in Central America

Recent global shocks have triggered sharp spikes in international food and fertilizer prices, raising concerns about their domestic impacts. This study examines the extent to which international price levels and volatility are transmitted to domestic food and fertilizer markets in seven Central American countries. We follow a multivariate GARCH approach using monthly data over the period 2000–2024. While results vary by country and commodity, we find overall low to moderate elasticities of price transmission in levels, but a stronger degree of volatility transmission in the very short term (1-month). Interestingly, price transmission tends to strengthen after 3 months, whereas volatility transmission is more short-lived and appears to dissipate. The co-movement between international and domestic prices shows no apparent trend over time and lacks consistency across countries and commodities following major global events. Back-of-the-envelope simulations of higher international food and fertilizer prices suggest modest, though non-negligible, impacts on local consumer and producer welfare. Panama: Agricultural R&D indicators factsheet

Panama’s agricultural research spending has gradually increased during 2004–2020, at an average rate of 2.6 percent per year. Expenditure levels peaked in 2017, but they have remained relatively high since. The 2017 peak can to a large extent be explained by the construction and equipment of IDIAP’s new headquarters. Panama outperforms many of its Central American counterparts in a number of key agricultural R&D indicators. Compared to many of its neighbors, Panama invests a considerably higher proportion of its agricultural output in agricultural research; it employs a relatively high number of scientists with PhD degrees; and it generates an aboveaverage flow of research outputs in the form of publications, new crop varieties, and new agricultural technologies. A very large proportion of Panama’s PhD-qualified agricultural researchers is approaching retirement age, posing a significant problem for the future conduct and continuity of agricultural research. The country will need to recruit and train scientists without delay, and provide the necessary remuneration, working conditions, and incentives to maintain their commitment over time.

ASTI Panama Database

This dataset includes national-level time series data on researcher capacity by qualification level, age bracket, discipline mix, and commodity, as well as a detailed breakdown of agricultural research investment across government, higher education, nonprofit, and (where possible) private for-profit agricultural research agencies. These data were derived through a series of primary survey rounds conducted by IFPRI’s Agricultural Science and Technology Indicators (ASTI) and in close collaboration with a large network of national collaborators. The ASTI data constitute a powerful resource for national and regional research managers, policymakers, donor organizations, and other stakeholders. ASTI’s key indicators provide both a diagnostic tool for assessing the allocation and use of existing resources and an advocacy tool for increasing resources and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of resource use. The ASTI website offers interactive pages that allow users to access country-level time series data, make cross-country comparisons, create graphs, and download country datasets and publications as well as detailed institutional information on agencies involved in agricultural research. The interactive benchmarking tool on the ASTI website is a convenient map-based instrument allowing users to make cross-country comparisons and rankings based on a wide set of financial and human resource indicators.
