Danielle Resnick

Danielle Resnick is a Senior Research Fellow in the Markets, Trade, and Institutions Unit and a Non-Resident Fellow in the Global Economy and Development Program at the Brookings Institution. Her research focuses on the political economy of agricultural policy and food systems, governance, and democratization, drawing on extensive fieldwork and policy engagement across Africa and South Asia.

2020: Nightmare for businesses (The Nation)

The Nation published an article about how Malawi’s economic outlook was good and businesses were thriving. When COVID-19 hit, all of that changed. Before the pandemic, 52 percent of firms operating on 50 to 75 percent utilization capacity, manufacturing, and production capabilities that are being utilized by an enterprise at any given time. In its short-term impacts of COVID-19 on the Malawian economy, 2020-2021, IFPRI estimates that government tax revenue would decline by four to 8.4 percent in the faster and slower recovery scenarios.
