David Spielman

David Spielman is the director of IFPRI’s Innovation Policy and Scaling Unit and has been with the institute since 2004. His research agenda covers a range of topics including agriculture and rural development policy; agricultural science, technology, and innovation; plant genetic resources and seed systems; agricultural extension and advisory services; and community-driven rural development.

Russia’s shift to divert fertilizer exports toward China and India raises food security concerns (Nikkei)

Nikkei (Japan) quotes IFPRI’s Director of Communications and Public Affairs Charlotte Hebebrand who noted, “Russia is clearly concerned about fertilizer exports. With rising fertilizer prices and ongoing conflict in Ukraine, securing revenue through exports has become even more crucial.”

“According to analysis by IFPRI, the export volumes of urea fertilizer and diammonium phosphate (DAP) from Russia in the year 2022 have exceeded those of the previous year. While Russian potassium exports have decreased, overall Russian fertilizer exports are reaching many countries. Furthermore, due to the soaring fertilizer prices, “the revenue obtained from exports far surpassed the previous year’s levels,” Hebebrand noted.
