Senior Scientist

Mahalingam Govindaraj is a Senior Scientist in the HarvestPlus Program of the Agrifood Innovation and Resilience Unit, where he leads CGIAR’s biofortification crop development research network and advances capacity building for the mainstreaming of biofortification traits. A globally recognized crop improvement leader, he has more than 15 years of experience developing and scaling climate-resilient, nutrient-dense crop varieties that improve food and nutrition security for smallholder farmers across Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Govindaraj has provided scientific and strategic leadership for multidisciplinary research teams spanning more than 10 countries. He has strengthened partnerships among national agricultural research systems (NARES), seed companies, governments, and development organizations to accelerate the development, release, and adoption of improved crop varieties. Developed more than 20 crop varieties and hybrids adapted to vulnerable production systems. Govindaraj has extensive expertise in crop breeding, including pre-breeding, quantitative genetics, population improvement, hybrid breeding, breeding for disease and insect resistance, seed systems, food end-use quality traits, advanced XRF/NIRS phenomics, and product design and evaluation. Prior to joining IFPRI, he led ICRISAT’s millet and sorghum breeding programs across India, West Africa, and Central Africa. He also pioneered the establishment of the world’s first minimum iron and zinc standards for national pearl millet cultivar release policy in India, a model subsequently adapted in Nigeria for pearl millet (iron, zinc, and calcium) and provitamin A maize.
An accomplished scientist and mentor, Govindaraj has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed publications and supervised numerous master’s and PhD students. Editor of the monograph entitled “Pearl Millet: A Resilient Crop for Food, Nutrition and Climate Security” by Crop Science Society of America, and “Breeding Zinc Crops for Better Human Health” by Springer Nature Publication. His contributions have been recognized through several prestigious honours, including the International Plant Nutrition Institute International Scholar Award (2009), the Promising Young Scientist Award (2017), the M.S. Swaminathan Best Scientist Award (2018), and the Norman E. Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application (2022) from the World Food Prize Foundation, USA. Govindaraj holds a PhD in Plant Breeding and Genetics from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, India.
