Land scarcity is rapidly worsening, and degradation continues apace. Water scarcity and degradation are also increasing and have been attributed to economic and population growth, poor water management, and the impacts of climate change. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment reports that 15 of 24 critical ecosystems are in decline.
