David Spielman

David Spielman is the director of IFPRI’s Innovation Policy and Scaling Unit and has been with the institute since 2004. His research agenda covers a range of topics including agriculture and rural development policy; agricultural science, technology, and innovation; plant genetic resources and seed systems; agricultural extension and advisory services; and community-driven rural development.

Africa has plenty of land. Why is it so hard to make a living from it? (The Economist)

The Economist published a news feature arguing that most of the ‘abundant’ land available in Africa is concentrated in a few countries like Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and farm sizes have shrunk or land is in hands of big businesses elsewhere. The article quoted Ephraim Nkonya, who expressed his optimism regarding the potential of Africa to be the future breadbasket of the world, given the large quantity of arable land available.
