Global Hunger Index 2017: High Hunger Levels in Sub-Saharan Africa (Voice of America)

October 14, 2017

Voice of America’s Africa 54 ran a report on the recently released Global Hunger Index (GHI), focusing on the region’s performance. The news outlet interviewed IFPRI’s market, trade and institutions division director, Rob Vos, who discussed key findings of the report. Vos explained this year’s report shows a reduction in overall hunger levels, but 44 countries fall in the “serious” category, seven in the “alarming” and one in the “extremely alarming”. Senegal and Ethiopia have reduced hunger by almost 50 percent since 2000, Vos added, mainly due to its success in providing agricultural support and building distribution systems.
