Kinya Kaibung’a is a Research Officer with the Development Strategies and Governance Unit, based in Nairobi, Kenya. She has a keen interest in leveraging machine learning, AI, and other cutting-edge technologies to boost climate resilience and food security in smart agriculture systems.

India’s domination of global rice trade stokes looming water crisis (Reuters)

Reuters interviewed Avinash Kishore, Senior Research Fellow in the Development Strategies and Governance Unit, for an article exploring how India’s growing population and new role as the world’s largest exporter of rice impacts scarce groundwater supplies. 

“India accounts for 40% of the world’s rice exports, so any changes in production will have global implications,” Kishore said. 

“The sheer volume of rice India produces and exports gives it a pivotal role in global trade,” Kishore said. “But it also raises a question: should the country be growing and selling so much rice?”
