A step ahead in school nutrition programmes: The case of Tamil Nadu (Economic & Political Weekly)

February 13, 2023

A commentary featured in the Economic and Political Weekly (India) explores the introduction of hot cooked breakfast through the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme (CMBS) in Tamil Nadu state and how to ensure its long-term sustainability. The breakfast scheme program builds on the 1958 midday meal (MDM) scheme. The commentary cites findings from an IFPRI study which showed that “MDM has positively contributed to the nutritional status of children, thus providing intergenerational transmission of benefits (Chakrabarti et al. 2021).”
