Ruth Meinzen-Dick

Ruth Meinzen-Dick is a Senior Research Fellow in the Natural Resources and Resilience Unit. She has extensive transdisciplinary research experience in using qualitative and quantitative research methods. Her work focuses on two broad (and sometimes interrelated) areas: how institutions affect how people manage natural resources, and the role of gender in development processes.

2020 Award Winners

Shenggen Fan, former IFPRI director general and present Executive Board member of One CGIAR, has been awarded the 2020 CHPAMS Inspiration Award, an award from the Chinese Health Policy and Management Society. The award is given to recognize members’ extraordinary determination to challenge the “status quo,” overcome significant barriers, and achieve accomplishments in scientific research, community service, or innovative activities that are above and beyond expectation. 
Johan Swinnen, Director General has been awarded the European Association of Agricultural Economists Book of the Year 2019. The book, The Poltical Economy of Agricultural and Food Policies offers an accessible introduction to the political economy of agricultural economics and food policies. It presents both theoretical arguments and empirical evidence; documents major changes and variations in agricultural and food policies; blends a firm analytical grasp of welfare economics principles with a nuanced understanding of how ideology drives the political economy; and emphasizes the importance of interactions between institutions and economic and political forces. Swinnen is based in Washington, DC in the Director General’s Office. (See Johan Swinnen’s bio).
Purnima Menon, senior research fellow, is the recipient of the American Society for Nutrition Foundation‘s, 2020 Nevin Scrimshaw Mid-Career Award in Global Nutrition. This award is supported by the Sight and Life Foundation. The 2020 ASN awards are given to an esteemed group of scientists whose contributions, mentorship, and dedication to advancing nutrition research, education, and practice are exemplary and inspiring. Purnima is in the Poverty, Health, and Nutrition Division and is based in New Delhi, India (IFPRI-South Asia Region)
Susana Constenla received from the Agricultural & Applied Economic Association (AAEA) an honorable mention in the Outstanding Master’s Thesis Awards category for her Master’s Thesis “Development Resilience: A Comparison of Popular Measurement Methods”. She will receive the award at the 2020 AAEA Awards & Fellows Recognition Ceremony on July 27, 2020. Susana is a research analyst from the Markets, Trades, and Institutions Division.

The Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) has announced its 2020 Class of Fellows. Former IFPRI Director General Shenggen Fan was named one of five Fellows.

Recognition as an AAEA Fellow is AAEA’s most prestigious honor. The main consideration for selecting Fellows is a continuous contribution to the advancement of agricultural or applied economics as defined by the Vision Statement. Achievements may be in research, teaching, extension, administration, and/or other contributions to public or private sector decisionmaking.
