David Spielman

David Spielman is the director of IFPRI’s Innovation Policy and Scaling Unit and has been with the institute since 2004. His research agenda covers a range of topics including agriculture and rural development policy; agricultural science, technology, and innovation; plant genetic resources and seed systems; agricultural extension and advisory services; and community-driven rural development.

Anderson Benson

Project Manager

Anderson Benson

Bio

Anderson Benson is a Project Manager in the Development Strategies and Governance Unit, based in IFPRI’s Malawi office. He supports the IFPRI team in managing complex data collection, analysis, and other research activities to inform development policy. His research interests are in development and agricultural economics. Before joining IFPRI, Anderson worked with Innovations for Poverty Action, Catholic Relief Services, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, working on poverty, food security, social protection, gender, and landscape restoration projects. He holds a master’s degree in Development Economics from the University of Rome Tor Vergata.

Average retail prices of maize recovered from a January slump before returning to a longer-term trend of marginal decline. Retail price changes were driven by changes in the cost of imported maize. Imports dominated cross-border trade in maize despite some strong but localized informal exports to Zambia and Tanzania.

Average retail prices of maize declined in all monitored markets in January by 16 percent on average. The price decline was driven by cheap imports of maize. Imports dominated cross-border trade in maize despite some strong but localized informal exports to Zambia.
