Pandemic threatens to create “new legion of poor”, alert institutions (Noticias)

March 23, 2020

Noticias (Brazil) reported on COVID-19 and how this health crisis could lead to a global economic crisis. Some estimates suggest that the shock to the world economy could reach US$2 trillion, which would translate into a deepening of poverty. According to IFPRI Division Director Rob Vos and Senior Research Fellows Will Martin and David Laborde in their blog post, How much will global poverty increase because of COVID-19?,  the possibility of a jump in poverty is not just theoretical. The organization estimates that a reduction of just one percentage point in the growth rate of the planet’s GDP would lead to a 2% increase in the number of people at risk of malnutrition. That is an increase of 14 million.
