David Spielman

David Spielman is the director of IFPRI’s Innovation Policy and Scaling Unit and has been with the institute since 2004. His research agenda covers a range of topics including agriculture and rural development policy; agricultural science, technology, and innovation; plant genetic resources and seed systems; agricultural extension and advisory services; and community-driven rural development.

Encouraging processed food manufacturers to voluntarily save calories did not work (Germanic News)

Germanic News published an article stating that a recent analysis of changes in the nutritional value of foods and beverages sold in English supermarkets between 2015 and 2018 showed no change in calorie, sugar, or salt content of products. 

Solutions are manifold, but Senior Research Fellow Stuart Gillespie says, “We need carrots as well as sticks when seeking to address the UK’s [obesity-generating] food environment. But when it comes to big food, the stick – in the form of a government-mandated tax – is far more effective.” Also published in New Scientist
