David Spielman

David Spielman is the director of IFPRI’s Innovation Policy and Scaling Unit and has been with the institute since 2004. His research agenda covers a range of topics including agriculture and rural development policy; agricultural science, technology, and innovation; plant genetic resources and seed systems; agricultural extension and advisory services; and community-driven rural development.

How corporations hijack food production (Deutschland Funkkultur)

Deutschland Funkultur (Germany) published an article about how corporations determine more and more how food is produced. At the same time, hunger is increasing again worldwide. Now companies should have even more influence. Discussions persist on the role of corporations and how to produce food for populations, particularly in developing countries. “The institutes of the Working Group for International Agricultural Research have been key partners for us for many years. Corteva and Bayer, for example, have a partnership with the International Corn and Wheat Center in Mexico. Corteva cooperates on sorghum research with the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture in Africa. And in agricultural and food policy, we coordinate with IFPRI. Above all, it is about globally effective political decisions that promote agricultural development and about the correct understanding of the relevant laws,” states Robert Hunter, spokesman for Croplife International.
