Farmers to Trump: No trade war, please (Politico)

April 09, 2018

Politico published an article on President Trump’s pledge to use resources to protect agricultural interests, amid rising trade tensions with China. The article features comments from IFPRI’s Senior Research Fellow, Joseph Glauber, who states that compensating farmers to countervail a trade action constitutes a moral hazard and could create an avenue for future conflict. “To sort of buy them off, it almost gives free rein to pursue other trade wars, and I think that’s a real mistake,” said Glauber.
