Fertilizer shortages could trigger long-term crisis (NHK World)

April 06, 2022

NHK News (Japan) published an article stating that a fertilizer shortage linked to sanctions against Russia and Belarus is pushing the developing world to the breaking point. Former Director General of the International Fertilizer Industry Association, Charlotte Hebebrand (Now the Communications and Public Affairs Division Director), discussed what nations can do to mitigate a global food crisis sparked by sky-high prices. Hebebrand said, “When there are concerns about the supply of fertilizers, traders will tend to favor the larger markets.” She discussed moving to a more efficient use of fertilizer. “Because oftentimes fertilizers are not applied in a not very crop-specific manner so perhaps that can be addressed in the short-term, too. Perhaps this crisis will provide further impetus to bring more of that research to fruition.”
