Global Database on Nominal Rate of Protection (NRP) 2023

This global database on the nominal rate of protection (NRP) in agriculture covers 72 countries and regions (EU treated as one region) from 2005-2021. The NRP measures the extent to which a set of agricultural policies affects the market price of a product relative to prices that would have been in place had there been no interventions. It is computed as the price difference, expressed as a percentage, between the farm gate price received by producers and an undistorted reference price at the farm gate level.

Global Database on Nominal Rate of Assistance (NRA) 2023

The Consortium’s Nominal Rate of Assistance (NRA) dataset contains a set of measures of the incentives that affect producers’ decision making in agricultural sector. These measures are categorized by their potential economic impacts, with market price support distinguished from payments based on output; payments based on inputs; and payments based on other indicators, such as factors of production, current or past area or livestock numbers. The NRA dataset thus provides a more complete picture of the extent of producer support to the agricultural sector, compared to Nominal Rate of Protection (NRP) that includes only the Market Price Support (MPS) dimension. These measures are provided in detail for individual commodities, and as aggregates at regional and global level.

Unlocking innovation: Assessing the role of Agricultural R&D in Latin America and the Caribbean

This report presents a comprehensive analysis of public agricultural research and development (R&D) in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), focusing on the contextual factors influencing agricultural R&D investment and their implications for agricultural productivity growth. The analysis combines new data for ten LAC countries collected by the International Food Policy Research Institute’s (IFPRI’s) Agricultural Science and Technology Indicators (ASTI) program with support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), with existing ASTI and other datasets. By integrating these various datasets, the report provides an in-depth examination of recent trends in public agricultural research spending, capacity, and outputs across the LAC region. Despite the demonstrated high returns on agricultural R&D investments, LAC countries continue to lag in allocating sufficient resources to this critical area. The traditional agricultural research model faces major challenges in keeping pace with the evolving agricultural landscape and food system more broadly.
