This virtual event will be held on October 15, 2026, from 10:00am to 11:00am (Pacific/Port Moresby) and October 14, 2026, from 8:00pm to 9:00pm (US/Eastern).
Food accounts for a large share of household budgets in Papua New Guinea, and when prices rise, the poorest families feel it first. Timely, easy-to-use price information can help government agencies, programs, and traders assess whether prices are rising, where food is cheapest, and whether a price increase is occurring due to climate events such as El Niño.
Join us for the virtual launch of the Papua New Guinea Food Price Monitoring Tool, a free, interactive dashboard developed by IFPRI’s Papua New Guinea program with the Fresh Produce Development Agency (FPDA). The tool tracks prices for 21 staple foods, fruits, and vegetables, drawing on more than 10 years of data from six markets—Port Moresby, Lae, Mt. Hagen, Goroka, Banz and Kokopo—with data available from other markets as well.
Speakers will introduce the tool and demonstrate how it can be used to compare prices across markets and over time, account for inflation, and identify unusual price spikes using the World Food Programme’s method. The event will also highlight how FPDA collects and shares food price information. The launch is open to everyone interested in food prices, markets, and food security in Papua New Guinea.
